On May 5th, an 18-wheeler was hit by a train while crossing the railroad tracks in Richmond Texas. Thankfully, no one was injured, however, the trailer and the water bottles it was carrying were destroyed. Often disasters like these are due to negligence and can be avoided by following standard processes and procedures set in place. Remember to follow these laws when crossing railroad tracks to avoid penalties:
- Commercial vehicles must stop within 50 – 15 feet of the railroad tracks and look both directions to try to locate an approaching train. Once deemed safe, the vehicle may cross the railroad tracks in a gear that allows it to complete the crossing without changing gears.
- All vehicles must stop if they are carrying hazardous materials
